The Farwell Artist in Residence program is up and running with our summer 2021 sessions. We are excited to introduce the Session I Farwell House Artists in Residence.
During our first session, we are hosting artists Dayna Walton (1 week), Sam Hensley (2 weeks), and Jake Miller (1 week).
Dayna Walton is an illustrator and printmaker currently living and working in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her work is rooted in the natural world, taking inspiration from the patterns, relationships, colors found outdoors. She is especially drawn to small things, from insects to fungi, and big things, like exploring the human relationship to land. Dayna runs a small business called Solstice Handmade, encompassing mural work, teaching workshops, freelance design projects, and a brand of handmade goods made in collaboration with other artisans. When possible she travels often to teach, hike, and research.
Sam Hensley is a printmaker, storyteller, and sculptor from Kentucky. She mends together tales of endearing yet unsettling creatures of varying sentience. Nursing the emotion between disgust and affection for things that cannot be understood, she reflects her own experiences with mental illness and feeling misshapen in your habitat. The telling of these stories is sometimes aided by animatronic puppets that she constructs as vessels for her tragically friendly beings. She received her BFA from the University of Kentucky.
Jake Miller is a sculptor and recent MFA graduate from the University of Tennessee in 2021. He received his BFA from Western Illinois University in 2016. Originally from northwestern Illinois, Miller’s work examines his circumstances growing up in a small farm town. Through his use of traditionally blue-collar objects/materials, he creates sculptures that highlight the problems surrounding toxic masculinity in rural communities. Miller’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, most notably Foley Gallery New York City, NY, Upstream Gallery New York City, NY, and Zg Gallery Chicago, IL. He has participated in many artist residencies and workshops such as Farwell House residency, Fredrick, IL 2018, and The A.I.R. and demonstrating artist at Atelier de la Nature, Arnaudville, La in 2019. Miller is a director and founding member of the newly formed Rural Midwest Artists Cooperative, an organization created to help bring more art and art education to rural areas of the Midwest.
We have several events scheduled with these artists at Farwell House and The Hub Arts and Cultural Center in Rushville.
You can find out more info about each of these events on our Facebook page.
